Review: The Revealed by Jessica Hickam

The Revealed by Jessica Hickam

Genres: Young Adult, Dystopian

Lily Atwood lives in what used to be called
Washington, D.C. Her father is one of the most
powerful men in the world, having been a vital part of rebuilding and reuniting humanity after the war that killed over five billion people. Now he’s running to be one of its leaders.

But in the rediscovered peace on Earth, a new enemy has risen. They call themselves the Revealed – a powerful underground organization that has been kidnapping 18 year olds across the globe without reservation. No one knows why they are kidnapping these teens, but it’s clear something is different about these people. They can set fires with a snap of their fingers and create a wind strong enough to barrel over a tree with a flick of their wrist. No one has been able to stop them, and they have targeted Lily as their next victim.

But Lily has waited too long to break free from her father’s shadow to let some rebel organization just ruin everything. Not without a fight.

I don't know where to go with this review. There were times that I really enjoyed The Revealed. There were times that I asked myself why I was still reading it. In the beginning, Lily acts really immature and reckless. I think that's what set the tone for me. But I can't deny that there were times that I got into the story whenever I ignored Lily's shortcomings.

As I already said, Lily annoyed me to no end. The fact that she gave up so readily made me really question if she was someone that I wanted to root for. I don't mind rooting for the under dog (that's usually who I root for!), but whenever you just give up and accept it... Nope. Have some backbone and fight for yourself. Instead of putting your energy into escaping the compound on immature jaunts, help protect yourself! There is a love triangle, which I'm not much a fan of. It wasn't glaringly bad, though.

The story really is what intrigued me. I feel like Jessica Hickam is a good writer with a lot of potential. But I think the story is held back by Lily. There is a twist later on that caught me by surprise and reignited my need to finish this one out.

Hardcore dystopian fans should give this one a shot. It's not going to be the best, but it certainly isn't the worse.

  1. I enjoyed this book! While there were some bad points, like Lily's reckless behavior and sometimes annoying personality, I liked it a lot. And I also wanted more background information on the war, because not much was given. But I'm excited for the sequel.

    1. I think if more information would have been given on her, I could have given her some sort of pass. But as it was, I got too distracted by her to enjoy the story. That always makes me sad!
